Markets, from Wednesday to Sunday!
Beginning in November and ending a few days before the great day, Winchester’s Christmas Market has become hugely popular with visitors from all over southern England. Set in the inner close beneath the towering cathedral are hundreds of richly decorated cabins packed with tempting art and craftworks. In the background is a large ice skating rink, and stalls selling warming drinks and seasonal snacks.
The market opens with a specially delightful ceremony, a procession of children carrying imaginitive lanterns they have made.
On certain days the market stays open for the evening, and these are a lovely occasion to enjoy a night out in the city.
Throughout the year Winchester’s High Street, and streets nearby have markets from Wednesday to Sundays - general markets with all kinds of clothes, home goods and street food, and special ones too, an enormous farmers’ market twice a month.
