Wolvesey, Castle and Palace

Wolvesey, Castle and Palace

John’s B&B looks across to the substantial ruins of the huge medieval castle of the Bishops of Winchester, close to the seventeenth century palace which is still today the home of the current bishops. The holders of the post used to be immensely rich and often were closest supporters of the King or Queen. One of the most famous of the bishops, William of Wykeham built not just New College Oxford but Winchester College and spectacularly rebuilt our cathedral. Civil wars sadly brought about the ruin of the towers and halls of Wolvesey.

The ruins, looked after by English Heritage, are open from Easter to late summer.
