City Art

A surprising pleasure for people visiting or living in Winchester is the abundance of sculpture and public art, some old, and plenty that is modern.

John can point out the best routes to discover these novel treasures. His favourites include a wonderful collection of bollards in a street near the cathedral (and the City Museum). This is the Square, where nearly twenty works of art have been sponsored by local shops, each one a stunning reproduction of paintings by, or in the style of famous artists.

Apart from our statue of King Alfred, one of the best loved works is a man on a horse sculpted by Elizabeth Frink in a delightful setting between the Law Courts and the Upper High Street.
